Topic: Doctrine vs. Policy
- Is there a difference between Doctrine and policy? If there is, how does it affect the moving forward of the work of God?
Dr. Wuehler, the "Mormon Psychologist", sums it up well:
"Doctrine - is what the organization believes. The basic beliefs that drive the organization which almost never change. To an organization doctrine defines: Who we are and what we are; What we believe; These basic principles which the organization will follow.
Policy, on the other hand, is the way an organization is functioning at the present; the day-to-day practices that dictate operations. Policy changes. It may not change rapidly, but it does change."
6
- What constitutes Mormon Doctrine?
Joseph Smith declared: "The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it."7
- Priesthood availability - doctrine or policy?
- Up until June 8, 1978, the Priesthood was not available to member of African decent.
- Where did this originate?
- Succession of President - policy or tradition?
- 'Uniform of the Priesthood' - why is this sometimes enforced as policy?
- Are members aware of all policies?
