- On Movie Ratings
Ryan Little (IMDb)
- This movie apparently received an R rating from the MPAA and they had to go back and reedit it to get it down to a PG-13. I've read that the director and producer (both LDS) had studied the MPAA rating system very closely in relation to WWII themed movies and were quite shocked that the MPAA gave them an R rating initially.

- How does it make you feel when Mormons are portrayed negatively in film?
A collection of interesting articles on this subject can be found here.
Should all Mormon genre films be happy & uplifting?
- What is the doctrine (if any) concerning members viewing R-rated movies?
- The famous "Benson quote" that most folks refer to as the doctrinal basis of "no rated-r movies" can be found here:
- Most of the rest of the percieved doctrinal assumptions come from talks authored by general authorties that are mostly directed to the youth. Here's a good example:
H. Burke Peterson, “Touch Not the Evil Gift, nor the Unclean Thing,” Ensign, Nov. 1993, 42 - there are some specifics in this talk...the first I have been able to find that lay it out clearly:
- "Again I say, leave it alone. Turn it off, walk away from it, burn it, erase it, destroy it. I know it is hard counsel we give when we say movies that are R-rated, and many with PG-13 ratings, are produced by satanic influences. Our standards should not be dictated by the rating system. I repeat, because of what they really represent, these types of movies, music, tapes, etc. serve the purposes of the author of all darkness."
- Can R rated movies be redeeming? (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan)
- I think so. I had a bishop growing up that was part of the "mountain man" movement and was very much into native american history. He recommended that we see "last of the mohicans" and that it was a perfectly acceptable R-rated movie for the youth to see. He actually did a fireside on some of the subject matter in the movie and related it to the book of mormon peoples. That always stuck with me.
- Can the member's of the Classification and Rating Administration be trusted?
Jack Joseph Valenti (September 5, 1921 – April 26, 2007) was a long-time president of the Motion Picture Association of America. During his 38-year tenure in the MPAA, he created the MPAA film rating system, and he was generally regarded as one of the most influential pro-copyright lobbyists in the world. More info on Jack here.
I found some interesting lds-themed commentary about this here.
